DB the Chef

27 Aug

Over the weekend, DB, myself and six of our lucky friends, had the experience of a lifetime.  DB was given a gift certificate to one of his favorite restaurants, Benihana, for its “Be the Chef” experience.

For those of you who are not familiar with Benihana, it is a Japanese hibachi restaurant where your food is cooked in front of you on a teppanyaki grill.  It’s not just food, it’s entertainment.  DB and I have probably been more than 50 times in our lives.  In fact, we’ve started a tradition with Mr. and Mrs. Smooth and celebrate each of our birthdays among bowls of legendary fried rice, flying shrimp tails and rousing renditions of their fake birthday song.  Just look at our refrigerator door!

Seven times! And that’s just our fridge.

Anyway, DB did a wonderful job as an apprentice chef at the Benihana in Midtown.  After a short lesson, we gathered in a private room with DB and his very patient partner in crime/ real chef, Pedro.   We made sure he was outfitted with the proper materials, including hat, apron and knife tool belt.

He had a lot of patience.

DB pulled out all of the usual tricks with ease.  He did struggle a little bit on the onion volcano, but his dedication is there.

Next came the shrimp.  Benihana chefs are masters at catching shrimp tails in their pockets, hats, you name it.  DB worked with what he had.

But he really shined on his pride and joy, the fried rice.  This is an item of food DB can’t live without and his attention to detail really shined through with this menu item.

In the end a great time was had by all and we were seriously stuffed.  You passed with flying colors and we couldn’t be more proud of you.

The Elite Eight

Between this graduation and the THC Hall of Fame, my future husband is having quite the summer.
